Burst pipes can be a nightmare. It is difficult to deal with water damage issues. They are instant and unexpected. There are a lot of reasons why pipes burst, but the most common are freezing, water pressure, worn and damaged pipes caused by internal corrosion.
Freezing
Water expands when it freezes. Surprisingly, ice that are formed in the pipes do not typically cause a break where the ice blockage occurs. Following a complete ice blocking in the pipe, continued freezing and expansion inside can cause water pressure to increase. This increase in water pressure leads the pipe to fail. Usually, the pipe bursts where there is little or no ice formed.
Pipes that are at greater risk of freezing are those exposed to the elements, those not insulated or those running along exterior walls.
Water Pressure
When the diameter of the pipe is too small, the water pressure will likely be too much for the pipe. Over a period of time, the strain will be too much for the pipes, hence cracks will start to appear. The higher the water pressure will be, the wider the pipe should be.
A blockage in the water line can cause water pressure to rise. Clogged pipes, like clogged toilet can also put a lot of pressure on pipes. When the water pressure becomes too much, the pipes will expand and burst.
Internal Corrosion
Internal corrosion of the water pipes can cause gradual destruction of the pipes’ surface. Leaks can sometimes begin to appear even after a few years of usage, depending on the water running through the pipes.
