The siphon is a unit that is fitted in a cistern to alow the toilet to flush and works by using the downward pressure of the water in the full tank on a rubber seal. The unit will sit inside your WC and when required will make it flush by lifting and dropping a large rubber seal over a hole in the base of the WC cistern. London Plumbers can repair or fit a new siphon. Just about the only part of the siphon that can wear out in a syphon fitted cistern is the diaphragm or flap that draws the water into the syphon to begin the water flow. The diaphragm will become worn or torn with time so it is not able to lift enough water fast enough into the syphon, so the water just flows back through the diaphragm. This type of fault can happen suddenly, or it will progressively worsen over time. Sometimes, debris in the cistern can cause the failure. This is normally the remains of a water freshener that has been stuck in the cistern. If you think the siphon has failed, then: Isolate the water supply and flush the water away, if possible. Remove the cistern lid and take off the top of the siphon by turning and lifting. Sometimes, clips are fitted, if so press them in and remove the siphon. Once removed, turn the siphon over and visually inspect the rubber seal on the base, looking for bubbling. If it looks damaged, then replace it with a new one from your local plumbers merchant. Take the old unit with you to get the correct replacement. The new one will probably need to be ordered so keep the old one for now. If the rubber looks fine, then check for debris. Clean out the cistern as a matter of course. A qualified Plumber would carry out this action. Fir the top of the siphon back on the base, either twisting or clipping as required. Restore the water supply and visually check that the unit is now leak free. If you couldn’t replace the seal straight away and the toilet is still leaking a lot of water, keep the toilet isolated and call a professional plumbing service to help.
