In hot water systems, water constantly circulates in the pipes then into the boiler. For newer units, there are two zones in which the zones have two water pipes connected to each other. The one circulates heated water into the rooms. For the other one, it returns the cooler water back into the boiler so that it will be reheated. On the other hand, for older versions, the system only has one pipe wherein hot water flows into the room to another then back to the boiler again within the same pipe.
In order for a system to be maintained, one should put lubricants to the circulating motor pump. In addition, you should also vent or purge the system’s radiators which possess automatic purge systems. Below are the steps on how to do this.
-
Open the radiator valves and convectors so that the air will come out. Keep the valves and convectors open until the water starts to come out. Put the water in a container or bucket.
-
Close the system valve, but before that, you should have drained the boiler so that rust and mineral deposits will be removed. Read the instructions written in the manufacturer’s manual.
-
Switch off the power and water. Unlike old cast-iron radiators, heating system nowadays has baseboard or free standing convectors wherein it’s more efficient. It has better appearance too as it is less bulky and it provides all the rooms with same amount of temperature. However, the only disadvantage of a hot water heater is that, there’s no centralized air because of the absence of duct work.
-
Attach the end of the garden hose to boiler drain.
-
Open the radiator’s vent valves situated in the house’s top floor. This lets the air move to the pipes which enables water to flow throughout the system.
-
Switch on the system’s water supply valve so that fresh water will come out. The valve is situated in the water pipe going to the furnace.
-
When water stops from running, you may close the vents and drain. Although they were already closed, water will not stop flowing into the boiler, throughout the system.
